Risk Management
The Risk Management Department operates within the City's Division of Finance. This department works in partnership with City departments to protect and preserve the City of Jackson's assets. This department handles traditional risk management functions including insurance procurement, claims, safety, on-the-job injuries and employee benefits. Business hours are weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. excluding holidays.

The City of Jackson purchases some insurance and is self-insured for some exposures. Commercial insurance purchased includes:

  • Auto Liability
  • Aviation
  • Crime
  • Employee Dishonesty Bond
  • Errors and Omissions Liability
  • General Liability
  • Law Enforcement Liability
  • Medical Reinsurance
  • Property and Casualty

Information on submitting a liability claim against the City may be obtained by contacting the Risk Management office at City Hall. The City receives the benefit of a Tennessee statute, the Tennessee Governmental Tort Liability Act. The Tort Act grants immunity for negligent actions by local government with the exception of the operation of motor vehicles, unsafe streets, unsafe structures, or a negligent act or omission by an employee. The City's liability is limited to $300,000 per person and $700,000 per incident

If you are involved in a auto accident with a city employee, have property damage or reason to believe that you have a claim for damages against the City of Jackson please complete a claims form and submit to the Risk Management Office. Please follow instructions on the form.

Administered through the Risk Management Department are medical benefits that include health, dental and vision plans for some 760 employees and retirees. Other benefits administered are life insurance, cancer and accident insurance and a cafeteria plan that allows a tax savings on insurance premiums. Employees and their dependent family members are provided behavioral health care assistance through an Employee Assistance Program provided by Pathways, a division of West Tennessee Healthcare. Also, wellness benefit offerings include flu shots, weight loss and tobacco cessation programs.

One of the most important areas of Risk Management is the safety and the well being of employees. When employees are injured in the course and scope of their job, they are provided for through the City's On-The-Job Injury benefit program. Our goal is to help employees work in a safe, productive, friendly environment.

What are the insurance requirements needed in order to do business with the City?
The City uses a variety of services and the insurance requirements vary. To find out the required insurance for a specific contract or project, contact the City of Jackson Purchasing Department.
What should I do if I observe an unsafe condition in the City?
