THE PIGEON DROP SCHEME
A woman strikes up a conversation with you at the mall. A friend of hers joins you, bringing an envelope of money she has just "found". The three of you look inside and discover evidence that the money was illegally gained. The friend of the woman you have just met claims she works in a law office nearby and says she'll call the attorney there. She returns to report that the attorney says you may divide the money and keep it, so long as each of you puts up "good faith" money for a certain length of time.
So the two women go with you to your bank while you withdraw several thousand dollars. They may also go to their bank and "withdraw" their money as well. The three of your then go to the attorney's office to deposit the money in the attorney's safe. You are told the attorney wants to see you. As you walk into an empty office, they exit by another door and you never see your money again.
TIPS: There is no law that says you must put up "good faith" money, no matter what the circumstances. Any found money should be turned in the police. If no one claims it giving the exact location and description the money can then be legally claimed.
Although con artists using this scheme may be of any age OR sex, women most commonly commit this scheme.
