Crime Prevention - Special Holiday Safety Tips

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

  1. Plan and review with your children the route and behavior which is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when revelers must return home.
  2. Remind all household drivers to remain cautious and drive slowly throughout the community.
  3. Remind trick-or-treaters by using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others.
  4. Stay in a group and communicate where they belong.
  5. Only go to homes with a porch light on.
  6. Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
  7. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.
  8. Never cut across yards or use alleys.
  9. Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.
  10. Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
  11. Always walk. Never run across a street.
  12. Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom).
  13. Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street, driveway or alley.
  14. Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will.
  15. Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.
  16. No treats are to be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an adult at home.
  17. Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible Adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
  18. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks also should be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle and sporting goods stores.
