The Uniform Patrol Division of the Jackson Police Department is the backbone of the force. It consists of dedicated men and women who are responsible for responding to calls for service, assisting citizens, conducting preventive patrols, conducting traffic enforcement and investigating criminal activity in their Precincts.
Officers are assigned specific geographical areas and are responsible for addressing community problems that affect the quality of life of the citizens in that area. Officers either directly address the problem or serve as a referral agency to put citizens in contact with the service providers that can solve the problems.
All entry level Jackson Police Department officers are initially trained at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and upon their return, complete a comprehensive orientation and field training program once they are assigned to the Patrol Division.
Specialized training is available to officers. Some of these opportunities include Bomb Squad Technicians, Hazardous Material Expert, Crime Scene Technician, Accident Reconstruction, etc.
The department’s Street Crimes Unit is under the direct command of the Patrol Division Captains. The Street Crimes Unit is made up of a group of Patrol officers and a Sergeant. This unit is used to saturate high crime areas throughout the city that have been identified through the department’s “COM STAT Plus” initiative.
Officers in the Patrol Division that have served 2 years are eligible to apply for positions outside the Patrol Division as they become available. Officers may apply for transfer to the Criminal Investigation Division, Traffic Division or the Special Operations Division which includes the Tactical Unit, Gang Enforcement Unit, K-9 Unit, Metro Narcotics and the Aviation Unit.
Officers who choose to remain in the Patrol Division are graduated through the Master Patrol Program, ultimately resulting in pay parity as a top patrol officer with Criminal Investigators and Sergeants.
