Gang Involvement/Warning Signs of Youth Involvment

What Can Parents Do?

The Jackson Police Department's Gang Enforcement Team was established in 1997. It was preceded by the Criminal Intelligence Unit, which was established in 1993. The Criminal Intelligence Unit began a network with other agencies in Madison County to address the gang problem in the area. Through an early assessment in 1993 we found that the criminal street gangs in Jackson were involved in all types of crime to include robbery, homicide and distribution of crack cocaine. In 1996 the Jackson Police Department teamed up with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to address the gang violence we were experiencing in the City of Jackson. The Gang Enforcement Team focuses its efforts on major offenders. We target the most violent individuals, and those who are influential in recruiting our youth toward the gang culture. Several Gang Leaders have been successfully prosecuted over the last couple of years. In 1997 the Gang Enforcement Team was established. It takes a two-prong approach to gang enforcement. It has a patrol aspect and an investigative aspect. We are one of the few full-time gang units in the State of Tennessee.

The Jackson Police Department's Gang Enforcement Team is also involved in a community awareness campaign, both in the City of Jackson and the surrounding West Tennessee Area. We rely on members of the community to work with us to keep the youth of Jackson from joining the ranks of these Criminal Street Gangs. We hope that you will be aware of the problem and try to make a difference in the life of a child to keep them from being pulled in to the lifestyle of a gangster.
