Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
(C.P.T.E.D.)
CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIONMENTAL DESIGN is not a new concept. However, it is one which has not been available to this community as it is now. The idea of C.P.T.E.D. is to make us all more aware of how the effective design and proper use of the built enviornment can lead to an increased quality of life.
There are three overlapping strategies used in C.P.T.E.D.
- One is NATURAL ACCESS CONTROL
The control strategy is to deny access to a crime target and to create a perception of risk to potential offenders. This is utilized to primarily decrease the opportunity for crime.
- Two is NATURAL SURVEILLANCE
This is to keep intruders under surveillance. Typically by such means as:
- Organized (e.g. police patrols).
- Mechanical (e.g. lighting), and
- Natural (e.g. windows).
- Three is TERRITORIAL REINFORCEMENTS
Physical design can create or broaden the user's sense of proprietorship and territorial influence. Thus, offenders perceive that territorial influence.
NATURAL ACESS CONTROL AND NATURAL SURVEILLANCE leads to a sense of territoriality, making it effective for crime prevention.
Another equally important aspect of C.P.T.E.D. is the 3-D approach to space assessment.
- Designation: What is the designed purpose of the space?
- Definition: How is the space defined?
- Design: How well does the physical design support the intended function?
C.P.T.E.D. is very essential to crime prevention. Its effects are undeniable. So. for business and residential applications of this exciting crime prevention tool. contact Inv. Abe Jones at the Jackson Poloce Department.
