The Engineering Department operates within the City’s Public Services Department and delivers a wide range of services related to the City’s existing and developing infrastructure. Engineering Department responsibilities include: Traffic Signs and Signalization, Street Lights, Street/Road/Bridge Construction and Maintenance, Stormwater Management, Driveway & Street Cut Permits, Residential and Commercial Development Review, and Street & Alley Closings.
Engineering Staff perform all engineering and technical services for the City to include design work and/or contract administration for road, bridge, signal, sidewalk, drainage and other public works projects. Engineering also manages the City’s road paving program and works with the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Planning Organization on short and long-range goals for the City’s transportation system.
The staff investigates complaints regarding traffic problems, conducts traffic studies and monitors traffic volume information to improve safety and to maintain the City’s network of traffic signals, signs, pavement markings and street name signs.
The Engineering Department is also responsible for reviewing all subdivision and commercial development designs on behalf of the Jackson, Tennessee Municipal Regional Planning Commission to ensure they conform to code requirements in regard to drainage, street construction, parking, street access and street lighting.
The Engineering Department is located on the second floor of City Hall, in the central portion of the building. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Calls are accepted on the City Services Hotline at 425-CITY (731-425-2489) 24 hours a day. Emergency situations should be reported to the Police Department at 425-8400.
