Risk Management

The Risk Management Department operates within the City's Division of Finance. This department works in partnership with City departments to protect and preserve the City of Jackson's assets. This department handles traditional risk management functions including insurance procurement, claims, safety, on-the-job injuries and employee benefits. Business hours are weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

Insurance

The City of Jackson purchases some insurance and is self-insured for some exposures. Commercial insurance purchased includes:

  • Employee Dishonesty Bond

  • Medical Reinsurance
  • Property and Casualty

Claims

Information on submitting a liability claim against the City may be obtained by contacting the Risk Management office at City Hall. The City receives the benefit of a Tennessee statute:  the Tennessee Governmental Tort Liability Act. The Tort Act grants immunity for negligent actions by local government with the exception of the operation of motor vehicles, unsafe streets, unsafe structures or a negligent act or omission by an employee. The City's liability is limited to $300,000 per person and $700,000 per incident.

If you are involved in an auto accident with a city employee and have property damage or reason to believe that you have a claim for damages against the City of Jackson, please complete a Claims Form and submit it to the Risk Management Office. Please follow instructions on the form.

Employee Benefits

The Risk Management Department administers medical benefits that include health, dental and vision plans for some 760 employees and retirees. Other benefits administered are life insurance, cancer and accident insurance and a cafeteria plan that allows a tax savings on insurance premiums. Employees and their dependent family members are provided with behavioral healthcare assistance through an Employee Assistance Program provided by Pathways, a division of West Tennessee Healthcare. Also, wellness benefit offerings include flu shots, weight loss programs and tobacco cessation programs.

On-the-Job Injury Program

One of the most important areas of Risk Management is the safety and well-being of employees. When employees are injured in the course and scope of their job, they are provided for through the City's On-The-Job Injury benefit program. Our goal is to help employees work in a safe, productive, friendly environment.
